Abstract
The Ranchi, a heterogeneous tribal population in Andaman Islands, ischosen here for the study of distribution of ABO and Rh (D) blood groups and physique based on Body Mass Index. About 61% of Ranchi population possess ‘Normal’ physique as per BMI classification. About 2% of adult females among them are reported as ‘Obese’ and another 18% as ‘Under nourished’ as per BMI classification. A high frequency of Blood group A is observed among them. One Ranchi women is reported as Rh-negative. But tribes such as the Oraon in Chotanagpur region possess high frequency of blood B, a characteristic feature of Indian populations. The fluctuations in phenotype frequency of ABO blood group system among the Ranchi population of North Andaman Island is attributed to operation natural selection at ABO locus. The Ranchi population is under genetic equilibrium and deviation observed and an expected frequency is just by chance.
