Abstract
India is a multi-ethnic country and the Scheduled Tribes (STs) constitute around 8.14 percent of its total population. There are 705 tribes living in different parts of the country. Each community has its own cultural and economic differentiation besides specific ethnic identities. Many of them are socio-economically and educationally backward as compared to other communities of the country. The Pengo tribe is one of such tribal community who inhahit Rayagada district of Odisha. Though a lot of measures have been initiated in the form of constitutional guarantees, development schemes and programmes, they however continue to lag behind. The issue of backwardness can only be effectively addressed by redesigning the present education system taking into account the needs, attitude and aspirations of community.
