Library

The research activities of the Anthropological Survey of India are strongly supported by its well organised libraries attached to all its offices located in different parts of the country. These libraries have been systematically built over the years by way of procuring selected literature, not only on anthropology, but also on other related subjects such as history, sociology, linguistics, Psychology, Human Ecology, Radiology, Biochemistry, Photography, Art and Art History, Statistics, Mathematics and many other disciplines. In addition to the rich and rare collection, the libraries of the Regional and Sub-Regional Centers possess books of regional significance which have been drawing attention of scholars from varied fields. The Central Library at the Head Office, Kolkata has emerged as one major library of Anthropology and related subjects with a total collection of 52974 booksand 12534 bounded journals including some special and rare collections numbering 807. Other important collections in the Central Library include Maps ( 4715), Reprints (3519), CDs (200), Rare Manuscript collection (6), Unpublished Thesis/Papers (50) etc. Total collections of books and journals across the AN.S.I.’s libraries include over 157,000. It subscribes to a large number of foreign journals (77) and Indian journals (52) and possesses invaluable manuscripts on the Andamanese by Portman and special collection of Dr. B.S. Guha, the founder Director of the Survey. Apart from our research staff, the Central Library is visited by a large number of scholars from different parts of the world. This library is not only used by the scholars of Anthropology and related subjects, but also by administrators, journalists, film makers, novelists and other literati. Of late a special drive has been initiated to procure Hindi language publications. To maintain a better co-ordination between all the Regional Centers and the Central Library, the whole collection of books is being classified under DDC 22nd edition. LIBSYS – 5.7.2 software is used across all the libraries. A major effort underway in all the AN.S.I’s libraries is retrospective conversion of the entire collection. Now, Anthropological Survey of India is in a mode of networking all the Regional Centers’ libraries with the Central Library and the proposal is that a new collection of five lakh books would be added to the existing collection and to launch a National Library for the Anthropological Sciences with a focus on South Asian Countries.
